Grade 9-Diploma
4. Students understand and interpret the characteristics of functions using graphs, tables, and algebraic techniques.
c. Use concepts such as domain, range, zeros, intercepts, and maximum and minimum values.
Rational: In class we will discuss about graphs and equations and how to go from an equation to a graph.
Assessment
Formative (Assessment for Learning)
The students are going to use a step-by-step worksheet to figure out the steps to take in graphing an equation. During class the teacher will go over what the different steps are and the students are expected to take notes on the organizer. The students will also get some problems where they will be given an equation and they will have to draw the graph following the steps. This worksheet will be done in class and they will have a chance to check their answers with a partner as well as do a couple of the problems out on the SmartBoard. At the end of class the students will take a quiz that is over the vocabulary that they need to know in order to understand graphs.
Summative (Assessment of Learning)
The students will be assigned homework dealing with graphs and equations. They will be assigned problems from the book and they will be due the next class. They will also have a chance to continue to answer any on-line questions regarding their group's stock and continue to get stock quotes.
Integration
Technology: In this class the SmartBoard will be used. It will be used when discussing the old homework and the teacher will solve the problems using the SmartBoard. It will also be used when the new material is presented. It will provide a way for the teacher to do some work and then have different slides with the different steps on each one. This will allow the teacher to go back to any slide that the students do not understand. The SmartBoard will also be used when the students are drawing the graphs they got for each example. The students will be called up to the board and given the opportunity to solve problems on the SmartBoard.
English: This lesson will help students with English as well because in the lesson the students are going to have to define words and use the definitions to help them use the concepts in math.
Groupings
At one point in class I am going to have the class split up into groups of two. In the group the students are to share the graphs that they got with their partner and discuss any differences between the two graphs. This will give the students a chance to check their answers with their class before being called up to the SmartBoard.
Differentiated Instruction
Strategies Verbal: During this lesson some mathematical vocabulary will be covered and the some words will be defined. Logical: This class will connect the concepts of graphs and equations. The students will go from equations to graphs. Visual: There will be examples done on the SmartBoard with graphs and pictures. Intrapersonal: The students will work independently on the worksheets going from equations to graphs before moving into small groups. Interpersonal: During the lesson the students will get the chance to work in pairs and then as the whole class on the worksheets that will be given during class. Physical: At times during class the students are going to get the chance to get up and answer questions using the SmartBoard.
Modifications/Accommodations
I will review student's IEP, 504 or EL LIDEP and make appropriate modifications and accommodations. If you miss a class then you are to check the class folder located next to my desk for papers that you may have missed. You can talk to me, or your fellow peers, to get the assignments and I would be more than glad to share with you any notes for the class missed. Any assignment given on a day you are absent will have the due date pushed back for you and the amount of time you will be given will depend on the assignment.
Extensions Students will get a chance to volunteer to use the SmartBoard. They will be able to write on it and interact with it. When the lesson is over I will post everything done on the SmartBoard as a PDF on the class wiki.

Maine Standards for Initial Teacher Certification and Rationale
Standard 3 - Demonstrates a knowledge of the diverse ways in which students learn and develop by providing learning opportunities that support their intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and cultural development. Rationale: This lesson shows a demonstration of a knowledge of the diverse ways in which students learn and develop by using different ways to teach the material. First the students will get a chance to share what they know about the topic and brainstorm different ways in which to use the concepts of slope, maximum, minimum, intercept, etc to draw a graph. Then the teacher will outline a step-by-step manner in which to create the graph from an equation.
Standard 4 - Plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, curriculum goals, and learning and development theory. Rationale: This lesson will show a planning based upon knowledge of the subject matter, students, curriculum goals, and learning and development theory. The lesson is based off one of the MLR's for Mathematics that is focused on tenth graders. The lesson also gives ample room for students to inform the teacher that they do not understand a certain topic and time for the teacher to re-explain it. Many of the multiple intelligences are worked into the lesson.
Standard 5 - Understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies and appropriate technology to meet students’ needs. Rationale: This lesson will use a variety of instructional strategies and technology. The SmartBoard is going to be used instead of a conventional white board. This will make it possible for the teacher to keep slides and latter e-mail the lesson to all the students. The students are going to have chances to work both in groups and as individuals on problems that have to do with mathematics. The lesson will also allow students to have time to move around and interact with others and the SmartBoard.
Standard 8 - Understands and uses a variety of formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and support the development of the learner. Rationale: During this lesson the students will be informally assessed on their step-by-step charts. The teacher will give all the steps and tell the class how to use each step and it is the student's responsibility to write the information down. The students will also get a worksheet of equations and be expected to draw the graphs. They will have time to work alone and in small groups on this worksheet. A couple of the question will also be done out on the SmartBoard. At the end of class this worksheet will be collected and graded. The students will also have homework from last class due and they will be assigned new homework. At the end of the class the students will take a quiz dealing with vocabulary that they had learned in a previous class.
Teaching and Learning Sequence:
When the students first enter the room it will be set up in its usual groups with four students in each group. They will be expected to work on their projects until class starts.

In this class students will learn that functions and graphs are related. Students understand and interpret the characteristics of functions using graphs, tables, and algebraic techniques.// To open the class the teacher will share a comic from xkcd. This comic is chosen to help get students thinking about the relationship between graphs and equations. After this the teacher will go over any questions that anyone has over the homework assigned last class. This homework will then be collected and graded by next class. (25 minutes) What, Where, Why, Hook Tailor: Interpersonal, Logical, Intrapersonal
After the homework is collected the class will move on to the new topic. The students are going to be given a step-by-step graphic organizer (see attached). The teacher will go over each step in creating a graph from a function (see teachers copy of step-by-step chart). The first step is to find any vertical asymptotes. These can be found by analyzing any part of the equation that would make it non-existent. These asymptotes can be drawn on the graph. Next the student is to look for any intercepts. To find the x-intercepts the student will have to set the equation equaled to zero. To find the y-intercepts the student is to substitute zero in for the x-values of the equation. The student should then plot a few more point to get a general idea of what the graph is going to do and then draw the graph. After going over this the teacher is to hand out a worksheet with a couple of equations for the students to graph (see attached). They are to work on this alone for a while before they will work in a group of two or three. (30 minutes) Equip,Explore,Tailor: Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Logical, Verbal, Visual
After discussing the step-by-step chart the teacher will allow the students to work on a worksheet. This worksheet is going to be worked on alone for a while. After all the students have had ample time to work on the worksheet the teacher will break the students up into small groups. While in the groups the students are to discuss what they got for graphs and see if any of the group members disagrees with the rest of the graphs. If there is dissent then the group members are to redo the problem so that everyone in the group knows how to solve it. After all the group members agree on all the graphs they will sit quietly until all the groups are done. When all the groups are done the teacher will call on random students to come up to the SmartBoard to reveal the answer that their group got. Yet again if there is any dispute on any of the graphs then the class will stop and go over that problem until everyone knows how to solve it. At the end of class the students are going to take a quiz (attached). They are to work alone on the quiz and may not use any notes. (20 minutes) Explore, Experience, Rethink, Revise Tailor: Interpersonal, Visual, Logical, Kinesthetic
At the beginning of class the teacher will go over and collect the homework assigned last class. Then while the students are working on their step-by-step charts the teacher will walk around the room and make sure everyone is getting the correct information. Later, when the students are working on their problems the teacher will roam the room answering any question that may be asked. At the end of the lesson the students will be assigned homework that deals with making graphs from equations. Evaluate Tailor: Interpersonal, Logical
